Crystals are organisms, like animals or plants. They grow from seeds just like a petunia or an elephant. And when they do grow, it is a regular geometry, although that regularity of form is often hidden by the aggregation of smaller crystals. But there is a pattern to their growth— sets of faces have parallel edges, and with every face there is a parallel face on the opposite side. And it is the crystalline geometry, which fascinates architects. The glass box architecture of our modern buildings are crystals whether we realize it or not (salt crystals Cubic System). The great lesson crystals can teach us lies in the configuration itself— the geometrical and mathematical arrangements of its surfaces.
Although the architect's first crystal was actually realized in the submission of the Roosevelt Memorial Competition in the late 1950's (see Seeds) and although there are many experiments with crystalline form shown here, it would not be until the late 1970's and 1980's that he would start building them— the wood-shingled Kallison Residence and the acrylic-shingled Crystal “Lumiere” in Point Richmond, California.
