The evolution of the architect's earth-sheltered structures took a turn in the mid-1980's. What had started innocently enough as a berm wall here and, a berm wall there (Barr Residence Napa 1965), had become, with the construction of the Kauai pyramid, the spiral earth shelter, and the sand castle in Paharo Dunes— a distinct species within the overall evolutionary process of an architecture. Part of that development would include both writing and speaking to the idea of using the earth itself as a medium to create an architecture— not just for the individual structures— but rather on a far larger scale where entire communities would be assigned minimal architecture which would be sheltered within the earth.
